My Frenemy Caffeine

I don't drink coffee. I don't drink tea. I don't drink sugar filled soda. I drink copious amounts of diet soda; but I'm a bit of a connoisseur when it comes to such things, in fact when it comes to my diet soda consumption - there's a hierarchy of sorts:

Diet Mountain Dew > Cherry Coke Zero > Coke Zero > Fanta Zero > Diet Dr. Pepper

If it gets beyond Diet Dr. Pepper, I'll just drink some water... and that's the thing, I know that I should drink less chemically delicious carbonated water and more of the straight stuff.

I've attempted to kick the caffeine habit on numerous occasions, once making it all the way to 27 days (note, despite what you may see or read or hear, 21 days does not a habit always make/break) before popping the cap on a bubbly Diet Dew. So, in my quest to be better, stronger, faster I'm not going to try and kick my amazing diet soda habit (and if you know me, you know how profoundly I love a giant Diet Mountain Dew) - I'm the dad of two amazing little girls under the age of three, teething is still a thing (as are monsters, leaky diapers, and bad dreams) and I need a bit of caffeine to get through the day (or at least my lengthy commute); instead I'm going to simply try and drink more water.

I'll drink a glass when I get up in the morning, one before I go to bed at night. I'll make a valiant effort to log my water consumption on myfitnesspal. I'll drink a glass with each meal and attempt to match my daily diet soda intake ounce for ounce with a little bit of cold H2O - after all, for every ounce of ice cold water you drink, your body expends one calorie to warm it up during the digestion process; that and water (in all its forms, including delicious Diet Mountain Dew) is, you know, sort of critical for little things like mental coherence, continuing to exist, and being awesome (note: studies have yet to support any direct correlation between awesomeness and hydration).

But why take my word for it, the fine folks at AsapSCIENCE have put together a short whiteboard video all about the importance of water for the human body:
